how to create a windows 10 recovery disk and system image

system image

for this discussion, an external (USB) disk, drive F:, will be used for the destination. it must be formatted ntfs (or possibly exfat?); fat32 is rejected.

  • open: Control PanelSystem and SecurityBackup and Restore (Windows 7)

  • in the left column of the window, select Create a system image

  • in the new window, choose the destination; in this case, drive F:

  • backup images will be created for the system, boot, and data disks that currently exist on the C: and D: drives.

  • created the folder: F:\WindowsImageBackup\win10\Backup YYYY-MM-DD HHMMSS

    • the folder is the same size as the contents of the disks that were backed up.

  • windows will offer to create a recovery disk once the system imaging process has completed.

recovery disk

this requires that a dvd burner is attached to the system.

  • label and insert a blank dvd in the drive.

  • open: Control PanelSystem and SecurityBackup and Restore (Windows 7)

  • in the left column of the window, select Create a system repair disc

  • select the dvd burner

  • click Create disc button
