how to turn an existing directory into a git repo

assuming an existing directory, * ~/src *. to turn it into a git repo, do:

        cd ~/src
        git init
        git config --global user.name `whoami`
        git config --global user.email `whoami`
        git config --global push.default current
        git add .
git commit -m 'putting ~/src under git version control, blah...'
        git remote add origin ~/src
        # i *think* the 'git config' stuff above eliminates the need for this
        #git push -u origin master
        git push
