how to install javascript extensions in google chrome

  • create a directory to hold the extension, e.g. extdir

  • copy the javascript file to the folder, e.g: cp script.js extdir

  • create a manifest file. example:

    {
        "manifest_version": 2,
        "content_scripts": [ {
            "exclude_globs":    [  ],
            "include_globs":    [ "*" ],
            "js":               [ "script.js" ],
            "matches":          [   "http://google.com/*",
                                    "https://google.com/_/hangouts*"
                                ],
            "run_at": "document_end"
        } ],
        "converted_from_user_script": true,
        "description":  "some appropriate description",
        "name": "the name of the extension",
        "version":      "1"
    }
  • adjust the js (file name), description, and matches fields to suit.

  • open chrome’s extension manager

  • select the Load Unpacked Extension button.

  • enter the folder with the extension that was created above.

  • use the Reload link if the script changes.
