how to backup and restore cisco configurations

these commands will backup and restore configurations to a tftp server. note that the destination file (on the server) needs to exist (unless the server is configured insecurely), and must be world writable. (the usual security cautions apply here…)

on the router/switch/etc…

to see the running configuration: + show run

to backup to a tftp server (tftp server ip address is 123.456.789.0 and the name of the file to save to is /backups/sw1.config:

# copy run tftp
address or name of remote host []? 123.456.789.0
source filename [c2960-1]? /backups/sw1.config

to configure a new device with a network to retrieve the configuration:

# config t
# int vlan1
# ip address <ip address> <subnet>
# no shutdown
CTL-Z
# show run

copy a configuration from a tftp server to the device:

# copy tftp run
address or name of remote host []? 123.456.789.0
source filename[]? /backups/sw1.config
# show run
# show interfaces
# copy run start
