how to turn the mac mini server into a simple bridge

in the odd case that one’s internet connection is on the wireless interface, one may connect wired devices to the internet via the mac mini. just enable ip forwarding.

to enable, run the following commands (from a terminal):

sysctl -w net.inet.ip.forwarding=1
sysctl -w net.inet.ip.fastforwarding=1
sysctl -w net.inet6.ip6.forwarding=1

to make the settings stick across reboots, create, or edit /etc/sysctl.conf to add the following:

net.inet.ip.forwarding=1
net.inet.ip.fastforwarding=1
net.inet6.ip6.forwarding=1

then, on hosts on the wireless network, add a static route to the wired hosts. for instance, if the linux host, dox, is on the wireless network segment, and the host server is on the wired network, run the following on dox:

route add -host <server ip address> gw <mac mini ip address>
