While Troubleshooting...
Throughout the entire troubleshooting process, there are several
things you should do.
Keep Notes
What starts out as a simple troubleshoot can sometimes unravel
into a major task; it is hard to tell at the beginning. Start
taking notes from the very beginning of the troubleshoot, even
if it seems like a simple problem to fix.
Write down each piece of information you gather, each test that
you perform (with the results), and what your solution is.
Consult Resources
Besides experience and good troubleshooting technique, a good troubleshooter also has product knowledge. Consulting available resources is a vital part of obtaining
knowledge about the product and about the specific problem you
are troubleshooting.
Browsing through references can be particularly helpful when you
find yourself "stuck" without an idea of what to try next in your
troubleshooting research. It can stimulate new thoughts and ideas
about the source of the problem.
Visit the Resources page of the Basic Troubleshooting area for pointers to specific
resources.
Consider The Human Factor
When you have been working long and hard on a problem that has
you stumped, it is a good idea to take a coffee break--or just
a break (the coffee is optional).
Frustration can impair your ability to think logically and rationally.
You may be surprised how often a short break can allow you to
think of solutions that you were too close to the problem to see.
